A Sonnet of Christmas

With nutmeg and the jolliest of times
With cinnamon and chocolate and sweets
With wint'ry cold nipping balmiest of climes
And ham with everything, and other treats
'Tis good and fair that we should all rejoice
With all until the end of this good year
And lift up all our praises in loudest voice
And thank God for the blessings granted here
The children losing stockings 'bout the house
The waffles, bacon on Christmas Eve morn
The catching of a wily clever mouse
And  'membrance of the babe one dark night born
For every good and joyous happy face
We'll know God sent his son to grant us grace

Christmas

Pine smelling, cookies
Lights and swirling bright colors
Against a black sky

12.21.2006

Winter

Gray, pale, colorless
Bleeding hues characterless
Yet they bring Christmas

Bright cushion of snow
Like egret feathers resting
Quieting the world

The whiteness eludes
Beige and pale syrup reside
Yet on the wind, spruce

Butterfly wings

Tiny, delicate
Breathing with beautiful
Tragedy and life

Do You Care to Share Your Pear?

Do you care to share your pear?

No! I don’t want to share my pear!

Why don’t you want to share, little bear?
Because it is all mine, this pear.
But don’t you want to share and care?
No! I will not share or care!
Don’t you want to brush your hair?
No! I will just leave my hair!
Don’t you want to choose what you’ll wear?
No! I won’t wear, and I don’t care!
Don’t you want to go anywhere?
No! I won’t go, I don’t care where!
Even if the place has flair?
I don’t care if the place has flair!
And all your friends will glare
And you will not go anywhere
And your pear you will not share
Why, little bear?
Because I do not care to share.
Caring and sharing give you flair.
Ok, I guess, if they give me flair.
If it gives me flair I will share my pear
I will brush my teeth and comb my hair
I will choose what to wear
And then I will go everywhere
And I’ll make sure my friends don’t glare
I’ll do anything to get some flair
I will even share my pear

Smile

Smile…
Today’s your day the world is yours,
Anytime you feel like it, just reach for more
Reach up high, take a piece of the sky,
This is your life, no time to die.
Smile…

Everywhere you go, people are looking up to you,
You’re the superstar, you know everything it’s true
Your turn around and blink ‘cause it’s your face
You’re on every billboard in every place.
So enjoy it now and
Smile…

You’re in charge of everything
You’ve got all the world can bring
Inside you know there’s something more
Keep pretending you’re perfect to the core
And smile
Who knows what damage you can do
When the world really does revolve around you
Hold your head high, sing your songs
You’re going fast, it won’t take long
But you’ve got to keep
Smiling

Music Is

Music is feeling without words

What your heart tell you that you cannot quite say

Music is

The sky – never ending

Water – ever bending

A smile – full of everything untold

The future – full of wonders new and old

Lonely

I’m feeling lonely

Like a feather on the marsh

With nowhere to go

Candice's Birthday

A lady with rosy cheeks fair

And abundant and beautiful hair

Had fixed up her garden

‘Twas anything but Spartan

And grew lovely shrubberies there

She lived with her mother and son

And there was no end to the fun

They had all together

In all sorts of weather

From dawn ‘til the day was done

She drew out and sketched up her thoughts

And large trees and flowers she bought

She fixed up backyards

Like picture postcards

Until they looked just as they ought

Her job and her work, they both grew

Until she had so much to do

That she moved to Bermuda

Was as happy as Buddha

And lived to a hundred and two

And on each of those many birthdays

She would celebrate different ways

But the one she remembered

Was the one in December

The most joyful of freezing cold days

They drank tea and ate lovely scones

Prepared and hand-baked at home

And though it was Tiki

They all just had tea

Trader Joe’s swears it was China-grown

So happy birthday to you here and now

We hope that you will recall how

In these long ago times

Of tea, scones and fine wines

We gathered right here and avowed

That Candice was loved for the sake

Of what she gave without thought to the take

And so, on this day,

I am sure we all pray,

This thing ends so that we can eat cake!

Naiad

Naiad, naiad, hear my call

As I watch your waters fall

Leaping lords and queens of all

Naiad, naiad, hear my call

Naiad, naiad, I hear yours

Cataracts on mountains roars

Pounding waves upon the shores

Naiad, naiad, I hear yours

Naiad, naiad, writhe and roil

Over rocks you trip and toil

Here I watch your waters boil

Naiad, naiad, writhe and roil

Naiad, naiad, waters bright

Glinting fountains catch the light

Bubbling, happy through the night

Naiad, naiad, waters bright

Jonathon to Ani

Oh stars and sky and racing Zephyr Breeze
Oh beauty that makes men to weep and shout
Oh wind and crying cranes and bending trees
Oh leave me not with query nor with doubt
All these contained in you are what I see
All these are roiling in the heart of you
All things of bright light and of passion free
All things of freedom, flight and beauty true
Oh look at me with all your wondrous gaze
Oh let your fighting soul find rest in me
For nothing would I try to still your grace
Nor faith that lives in you like windy seas
Oh all that lives for truth and freedom pure
So you are to me, trustworthy and sure

You and Me

Clouds and misunderstanding gloom and doubt

I think we can figure this out
Sorrow hurting all those painful years
Grief and mourning unnecessary tears

But we will come out of the night
Stand together in the light
As firm warriors we will fight
And we will make this right

You and me, me and you
And together we make two
We will stand forever tall
One will catch when the other falls
When you need someone to tell you that you’re right on
Someone to tell you to fight on
Someone who can see through the faces that you try on
I’ll be there; I’ll be your shoulder to cry on

So many things to say
So many hundreds of words to put together
I don’t think I could ever explain
But for now it’s enough to understand
That you’ll be there, holding my hand
And stay beside me through the pain
Through all the storms and all the rain

You and me, me and you
And together we make two
We will stand forever tall
One will catch when the other falls
When you need someone to tell you that you’re right on
Someone to tell you to fight on
Someone who can see through the faces that you try on
I’ll be there; I’ll be your shoulder to cry on

And when it’s all over
And we pretend that we’ve forgotten
All the battles that we’ve fought
All the times misbegotten
We’ll remember and we’ll laugh at the good days
When we shared ourselves a hundred different ways
We’ll look at the memories and sigh
And maybe – just maybe – we will cry

You and me, me and you
And together we make two
We will stand forever tall
One will catch when the other falls
When you need someone to tell you that you’re right on
Someone to tell you to fight on
Someone who can see through the faces that you try on
I’ll be there; I’ll be your shoulder to cry on

Just Not Enough

I’m doing my best but it’s just not enough
Got to stay strong, got to stay tough
Nobody listens nobody cares
Everybody’s whispering, everybody stares… stares
I just want to leave, just to sink underground
Maybe die, go up and float around
Maybe they’d miss me when I’m gone
But I don’t think so I don’t think so
I’m doing my best but it’s just not enough
Got to stay strong, got to stay tough
Nobody listens nobody cares
Everybody’s whispering, everybody stares… stares
Sometimes I’m looking and I try to understand
But their world is so hard to comprehend
I know that I can do it, if I really try
But they never seem to look at me and try to see mine
I’m doing my best but it’s just not enough
Got to stay strong, got to stay tough
Nobody listens nobody cares
Everybody’s whispering, everybody stares… stares
The world underneath me is falling apart
Into little pieces, slashing my heart
When I’ve traveled for so long and hungered for so much
It doesn’t seem right that it crumbles at my touch
I’m doing my best but it’s just not enough
Got to stay strong, got to stay tough
Nobody listens nobody cares
Everybody’s whispering, everybody stares… stares
Got to come through it, got to live somehow
If I want to survive, I got to think straight now now
No time to think, no time to waste,
Just got to know when I’m in the chase
No time to do what I know is right
Just got to come through it, make it through the fight
I’m doing my best but it’s just not enough
Got to stay strong, got to stay tough
Nobody listens nobody cares
Everybody’s whispering, everybody stares… stares
Hampering, hammering, always right there
Sitting on my breathing space, trying to block my air
I know I’m going to make it, going to make it through alive
But how much longer will it take before I shrivel up and die?
I’m doing my best but it’s just not enough
Got to stay strong, got to stay tough
Nobody listens nobody cares
Everybody’s whispering, everybody stares… stares
I’m pulling through, hopefully I’ll last
Got to pull up to the dock, make my ship fast
I stumble from the waves and fall onto land
Feel the grit in my mouth, I taste blood and sand
I’m doing my best but it’s just not enough
Got to stay strong, got to stay tough
Nobody listens nobody cares
Everybody’s whispering, everybody stares… stares
How much more can you take out of me?
When will it stop, how long will it be?
Every time I fight, it hurts all the more,
But I still fight, I won’t let you go
I won’t let you take a hold of me
I’m going to keep fighting till you set me free
It’s a matter of honor, a matter of course
You cannot take my spirit by force
I’m doing my best but it’s just not enough
Got to stay strong, got to stay tough
Nobody listens nobody cares
Everybody’s whispering, everybody stares… stares

Love is my comfort,
Courage is my sword
I shall ride forward to greet the rising sun
The clouds over the moon are gone
The silver light
Shines down on me
I see the simple faces
Looking happy and content
But I will run away from their Narrow-mindedness
I will see my own trail
Adventure will fall upon me
And I will be not afraid
For you shall be at my side
Your love at my right hand
And in the darkness I will shout
I will sing to you, O Lord
The rising fingers of dawn
Come with you into the day
And I will praise you forever

Mask of Pain

She calls it like she sees it
No matter how or when or where
And everyone else hates her
Because she doesn’t care
She goes through life a bull
Trampling all in her path
Those who do not hate her sight
Tremble at her wrath

Mask of anger
Hide the hurting
Hide the scars
And play the game
Mask of strength
And callus roughness
Masquerade
To hide the pain

All around her they are shouting
Saying why don’t you go away?
She is hurting, but she pretends again
Her eyes are darting this and that way
So she lashes out, she fights back
It’s the only way she will survive
Only when she is alone
Will she allow herself to cry

Mask of anger
Hide the hurting
Hide the scars
And play the game
Mask of strength
And callus roughness
Masquerade
To hide the pain

I love you

I’ll keep on saying it
No matter how long it takes
You to figure out it’s true
You are loved.
No matter how rich you are,
Or how poor you become,
No matter how smart you are,
Or how dumb,
You are loved.
No matter how you change
Or if you start on drugs
No matter if you roll your eyes
When I give you hugs,
You are loved.
No matter where you go,
No matter where you stay,
No matter who you marry,
Or what you say,
You are loved.
No matter what anyone thinks,
About you or anything
No matter if you change,
Or what tomorrow brings,
You are loved.
No matter if you live in a tree,
Or in a mansion on a hill,
No matter if you save lives in battle
Or if you kill,
You are loved.
No matter what you think,
No matter what you do,
You’d better believe me,
Because this is true,
You are loved
No matter if you’re loved by many
Or just by one
No matter if you’re in jail
Or if you journey to the sun
You are loved
No matter if you’re fat or thin
Tall or short
No matter if you can’t read or write
Or if you’re no good in sports
You are loved
Do you know why?

Because I love you.

And I’ll know

What you’ve been trying to show
